Heat Pumps for Terraced Houses

Terraced homes have a smaller footprint but offer excellent heat retention, thanks to shared walls on both sides. That means a smaller, more affordable heat pump — and lower running costs from day one.

Why choose a heat pump?

Lower bills, lower carbon, longer lifespan than a boiler.

Lower Running Costs

Heat pumps are 300% efficient — for every 1kW of electricity, you get 3kW of heat. Typical savings of £500–£1,300/year vs gas, oil, or LPG.

£7,500 Grant Available

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers £7,500 of your installation cost. We handle the entire application — you just get the confirmation email.

20+ Year Lifespan

Heat pumps last over 20 years — nearly double a gas boiler. Less maintenance, no annual gas safety checks, fewer breakdowns.

Zero Carbon Heating

Heat pumps produce no on-site emissions. Pair with solar panels for virtually free, zero-carbon heating.

Future-Proof

The gas boiler ban on new builds starts 2025. Heat pumps are the future of home heating — get ahead of the curve.

0% VAT

Heat pump installations are VAT-free until 2027. That's a saving of up to £2,000 on a typical installation.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the most common heat pump questions.

Can you fit a heat pump in a terraced house?
Yes. Terraced houses are absolutely viable for heat pump installation. The outdoor unit is typically placed in the rear garden or a side alley. Terraced homes actually have excellent heat retention because both side walls are shared with neighbours, which means a smaller, less expensive heat pump can often do the job.
Is there enough space for a heat pump unit in a terraced house?
An air source heat pump outdoor unit is roughly the size of a large suitcase — about 1 metre wide by 0.4 metres deep. It sits on a small concrete base in your rear garden or side access. Even terraced houses with compact gardens have enough space. The unit needs to be 1 metre from the boundary, which is achievable in most layouts.
Will my neighbours hear the heat pump in a terraced street?
Modern heat pumps are very quiet — around 40–45dB, similar to a fridge. Planning rules cap noise at 42dB at the nearest property boundary. In terraced streets, we position units carefully and can use acoustic barriers if needed. Most neighbours don't notice the unit at all, particularly compared to traffic noise in urban areas.
Do terraced houses need underfloor heating for a heat pump to work?
No. Heat pumps work perfectly well with radiators. While underfloor heating is more efficient at low flow temperatures, most terraced homes use radiators and don't need to change. We check each radiator during the survey — some may need upsizing, but many terraced homes with reasonably modern radiators need no changes at all.
