Why install a home EV charger?

Convenience, savings, and a smarter way to charge your car.

Charge at Home Rate

Charging at home on an overnight tariff costs around 8p/kWh — roughly £3 for a full charge. The same charge at a public rapid charger costs £15–£25. That's over £800 saved per year for a typical driver.

Smart Scheduling

Set your charger to start automatically when off-peak tariffs kick in. Chargers like the Zappi and Ohme learn your schedule and ensure your car is ready when you need it, at the lowest possible cost.

7x Faster Than a Plug

A dedicated 7kW charger is around seven times faster than a standard 3-pin plug. A full charge takes 3–4 hours instead of 20+ hours — and it's far safer for your home's electrics.

Increase Property Value

A dedicated EV charger is increasingly seen as a home essential. Properties with chargers appeal to a wider pool of buyers and can sell faster in today's market.

Weatherproof Outdoor Install

All chargers we install are IP-rated for outdoor use. Whether it's on your garage wall, driveway post, or the side of your house, it's built to handle British weather year-round.

App Control

Monitor and control your charger from your phone. See charging sessions, set schedules, track energy usage, and even divert surplus solar energy to your car with compatible chargers like the Zappi.

Local electricians, not a national call centre

We're not a comparison site that passes your details to whoever's cheapest. Abode is a local company covering Dorset, Hampshire & Wiltshire. We install chargers from Zappi, Ohme, and EO Mini Pro — and we'll recommend the right one for your car and home, not the one with the biggest margin.

Every installation is carried out by our own NAPIT-registered electricians. We handle the survey, the installation, the DNO notification, and the app setup. One company, one point of contact, one fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the most common EV charger questions.

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?
A 7kW home charger will fully charge most electric cars in 4–8 hours depending on battery size. A typical overnight charge of 6–8 hours adds around 150–200 miles of range — more than enough for most daily driving. You plug in when you get home, wake up to a full battery.
What EV charger do I need?
For most homes, a 7kW (7.4kW) smart charger is the best option. We install chargers from Zappi, Ohme, and EO Mini Pro. The Zappi is ideal if you have solar panels (it can divert surplus solar to your car). The Ohme is great for smart tariff integration. We'll recommend the right charger based on your car, electrical supply, and priorities.
Do I need a new consumer unit?
Not always. If your consumer unit is modern and has spare capacity, we can often install the charger without any upgrade. If your board is older or doesn't meet current regulations, we may need to upgrade it. We check during the free survey and include any costs in your fixed-price quote — no surprises.
Can I charge my car from solar panels?
Yes — chargers like the Zappi have a solar divert mode that automatically uses surplus solar energy to charge your car. This means you can charge for free during sunny days instead of exporting that energy to the grid for just 4–15p/kWh. It's one of the smartest ways to use your solar investment.
How much does EV charger installation cost?
A typical home EV charger installation costs between £800 and £1,200 including the charger unit and all installation work. The exact cost depends on the charger model you choose and the cable run distance from your consumer unit to the charging point. 0% VAT applies. We give you a fixed price after the free survey — no hidden costs.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, no. Home EV charger installations fall under permitted development rights, so no planning application is needed. However, if you live in a listed building or conservation area, you may need to check with your local planning authority first. We can advise on this during the survey.
