Why add a battery to your home?

Whether you have solar panels or not, a battery can transform the way you use electricity.

Store Solar Energy

Without a battery, up to 50% of your solar energy is exported for just 4–15p/kWh. A battery stores that energy so you can use it yourself in the evening, saving 25–30p per unit.

Use Off-Peak Tariffs

Charge your battery overnight at 7p/kWh on tariffs like Octopus Flux or Intelligent Go, then use that stored energy during peak hours when rates hit 30p+. Typical savings of £400–£800/year.

Backup Power

Keep your lights, fridge, and internet running during power cuts. Systems like the GivEnergy All-in-One and Tesla Powerwall switch over automatically within seconds.

Reduce Grid Dependency

Use more of the energy you generate or buy at the cheapest rates. A battery can help you become up to 80% self-sufficient when paired with solar panels.

Increase Solar ROI

Solar panels pay back faster when you use more of what they generate. A battery can increase your solar self-consumption from 30% to 80%, significantly shortening your payback period.

Smart Home Integration

Monitor and control your battery from your phone. See real-time energy flow, set charge schedules, and track savings. All the brands we install come with full app control.

Local installers who design and fit every system

We're not a national chain or a comparison site. Abode is a local energy company covering Dorset, Hampshire & Wiltshire. We install batteries from GivEnergy, Tesla Powerwall, and Fox ESS — and we'll recommend the right one for your home, not the one with the biggest margin.

Every installation is designed by us and fitted by our own NAPIT-registered electricians — not subcontractors. We also install solar PV and heat pumps, so if you want a complete energy system, we can design and fit it all in one project.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the most common battery storage questions.

How long does a home battery last?
Most home batteries are warranted for 10–12 years and designed to last 15–20 years. Manufacturers like GivEnergy and Tesla guarantee a minimum of 80% capacity retention over the warranty period. After that, the battery continues to work — just with slightly reduced capacity, much like a phone battery over time.
What size battery do I need?
Most homes do well with a 5–10kWh battery. A 5kWh battery covers a typical evening's electricity usage. If you have solar panels, a higher usage home, or want to maximise off-peak tariff savings, a larger 10–13kWh system may be worthwhile. We size the battery based on your actual energy usage and goals during the free survey.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes — a battery can be retrofitted to almost any existing solar PV system. We install a hybrid or AC-coupled inverter alongside your battery, which works with your current panels without needing to replace them. It's one of the most common installations we do.
How much can I save with a home battery?
Typical savings are £400–£800 per year depending on your tariff and whether you have solar. With a smart tariff like Octopus Flux or Intelligent Go, you can charge at 7p/kWh overnight and avoid paying 30p+ during peak hours. With solar, savings can be even higher as you're storing energy you generated for free.
Do batteries work during a power cut?
It depends on the system. Some batteries like the GivEnergy All-in-One and Tesla Powerwall include backup capability as standard, switching over automatically within seconds. Other systems can have backup functionality added. We'll recommend the right setup based on your priorities during the survey.
How long does battery installation take?
A typical battery installation takes one day. The battery unit is usually wall-mounted in your garage, utility room, or on an outside wall. If we're also installing solar panels or making changes to your consumer unit, it may take 1–2 days. There's minimal disruption and we tidy up after ourselves.
