Are Heat Pumps Reliable?

After 10+ years installing heat pumps, here's what we've seen. The honest truth about reliability, noise, and quality.

Efficiency (COP 3+)

Yes. Very reliable.

Modern air source heat pumps are extremely reliable. They have fewer moving parts than a gas boiler, no combustion, no flue, no gas valve to fail. Expected lifespan is 20–25 years with annual servicing.

In 10+ years of installations, our callback rate is under 3%. Most of those are minor adjustments, not failures. The technology is proven, the components are industrial-grade, and the manufacturers we work with have decades of track record.

Reliability by brand

We install all major brands. Here's what we've seen in the field.

Daikin

Japanese engineering with an excellent track record. Very few warranty claims in our experience. 5-year warranty as standard, extendable to 7. Strong UK parts network and technical support.

Vaillant

German precision engineering. Very low failure rates across our installations. Excellent build quality and a strong UK support network. 5-year warranty standard, well-known in the UK market.

Grant

Irish-made and specifically designed for UK and Irish climates. Great parts availability and fast turnaround on warranty work. Particularly popular in rural properties switching from oil.

Samsung

Solid, dependable units with fewer bells and whistles but reliable core performance. Good value for money. The Gen6 R290 units are particularly well-regarded in the trade.

Mitsubishi

The largest installed base in the UK. Proven over decades. The Ecodan range is one of the most-installed heat pumps in the country. Reliable, well-documented, extensive support network.

Are heat pumps noisy?

No. Modern air source heat pumps run at 40–45dB. For context, that's quieter than a fridge. The quietest units we install — the Daikin Altherma — run at around 35dB. You'd struggle to hear it from inside your house.

Planning regulations require units to produce no more than 42dB at the nearest property boundary. We position every unit carefully and use anti-vibration mounts as standard to minimise any impact on you or your neighbours.

What maintenance do heat pumps need?

Less than a gas boiler. Here's the full picture.

Annual Service

Recommended once a year. Costs £100–£150. An engineer checks refrigerant pressures, electrical connections, flow rates, and general condition. Straightforward and quick.

No Gas Safety Cert

Unlike gas boilers, heat pumps don't need an annual gas safety certificate. No risk of carbon monoxide either. One less thing to worry about.

Refrigerant Checks

A qualified engineer should check the refrigerant circuit every few years. This is part of the annual service for most companies. Leaks are rare but detectable early.

Filter Cleaning

Clean the external unit's filters occasionally — just remove any leaves or debris. Takes five minutes. Some units have washable internal filters too. That's it.

Compare: Gas Boiler

Gas boilers need an annual service, an annual gas safety certificate (if rented), and have more parts that wear out — heat exchangers, gas valves, fans, ignition components, flue seals. Heat pumps have far fewer failure points.

What can go wrong?

We'd be dishonest if we said nothing ever goes wrong. Here's what we've seen in 10+ years:

Bad installation is the #1 cause of problems. An undersized system, poor pipe sizing, or incorrect defrost settings will cause issues. This is why MCS certification matters — it guarantees the system is properly designed and installed to meet the manufacturer's specifications.

Compressor failure is rare but possible after 10+ years. It's the most expensive component to replace, but it's covered by the manufacturer warranty (typically 5–7 years). In practice, we've seen very few compressor failures before year 15.

Sensor or PCB (circuit board) failures happen occasionally. These are quick repairs — parts are readily available from all the major brands and a competent engineer can swap them in under an hour.

The pattern is clear: most problems trace back to poor installation, not the technology. Choose an MCS-accredited installer with heat pump experience and the vast majority of issues disappear.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about heat pump reliability.

Are heat pumps good?
Yes. Heat pumps are around 300% efficient — for every 1kW of electricity used, you get 3kW of heat. They have a 20+ year lifespan, low maintenance requirements, and no combustion, so no risk of carbon monoxide. They're the most efficient heating system available for UK homes.
Are heat pumps reliable?
Very reliable. Heat pumps have fewer moving parts than gas boilers — no gas valve, no flue, no combustion chamber. In over 10 years of installations, our callback rate is under 3%. Expected lifespan is 20–25 years with annual servicing.
Are heat pumps noisy?
Modern air source heat pumps operate at 40–45dB, which is quieter than a fridge (50dB). The quietest models run at around 35dB. Planning regulations require units to be no louder than 42dB at the nearest property boundary. Most homeowners say they barely notice them.
How long do heat pumps last?
20–25 years with annual servicing. That's nearly double the lifespan of a gas boiler (12–15 years). The compressor is the main component and is typically warrantied for 5–7 years, though failures before 15 years are rare.
Do heat pumps need much maintenance?
Less than a gas boiler. An annual service costs £100–£150. There's no gas safety certificate needed, no risk of carbon monoxide, and no combustion parts to wear out. You'll need occasional filter cleaning and a refrigerant check every few years. That's it.
